Biography

Jan Jedryszek is a PhD student in Physics at the Technical University of Munich and the Max Planck School Matter-to-Life. He began his scientific journey with a bachelor's in neuroscience, drawn to emergent intelligence and natural computing, before earning a master’s in Molecular Systems Chemistry and Engineering from Heidelberg University. Jan has worked at the European Space Agency on bio-mining technologies. His PhD research explores synthetic morphogenesis—how cells grow into organisms, and how we might teach other forms of matter, like synthetic cells, to communicate and self-organize like living systems. He laughs at his own jokes. His favorite authors are Borges, Calvino and Lem.

In Jan's words

“Being selected for this fellowship is truly humbling. This is a rare opportunity to work on a moonshot idea, to turn ambitious science into practical technology.”

  1. Co-founded Biotic, the nonprofit behind SpudCell, the first synthetic cell with a full life cycle

Jan co-founded Biotic, an open source bioengineering nonprofit, with Kate Adamala, Drew Endy and Chris Raggio. Biotic's SpudCell is reported as the first synthetic cell built from scratch that grows, copies its DNA and divides. It was covered by the New York Times, Scientific American and others.
