Tick bites
A topical solution that prevents and reverses tick bites
Biography
Joseph Beyene is a scientist, entrepreneur, and educator committed to translating biotechnology into solutions for urgent global health challenges. He is developing a first-in-kind topical approach designed to prevent tick bites by targeting biological processes essential to tick attachment and feeding, with potential applications across human health, animal health, agriculture, and livestock systems.
Joseph earned his PhD from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where he received an NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award. His research contributed to the foundational science behind VesigenTx, a Harvard biotechnology spinout that raised a $28 million Series A and was later acquired by Turn Biotechnologies.
He also helped expand Harvard Medical School’s first Lyme Disease Research Consortium and currently serves as adjunct faculty in Northeastern University’s Graduate Biotechnology Program.
Across his scientific, entrepreneurial, and educational work, Joseph seeks to address global challenges while opening doors for individuals from historically marginalized communities to become scientists, founders, and leaders shaping the future of innovation.
In Joseph's words
“Receiving an O’Shaughnessy Fellowship gives me the opportunity to continue building a first-in-kind topical solution designed to prevent tick bites and address a growing global public health threat. I envision a world where people and animals can live safely, protected from tick-borne diseases. I am deeply grateful to OSV for believing in this vision.”
